How Far Is Merzouga From Marrakech? The Route, Day by Day
About 560 km and 8 to 9 hours of driving each way, over the 2,260 m Tizi n'Tichka pass. How the 3-day trip splits the road, and the stops on the way. October 2026.
Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech, which is 8 to 9 hours of driving each way before you add a single stop. That is why nobody sells it as a day trip, and why the classic tour takes three days: the road south is split by a hotel night, so the only truly long day is the drive home. The distance is not wasted time, though. The route crosses the High Atlas, passes Morocco’s best-known kasbah and runs through two gorges before the dunes appear.

The road in four legs
| Leg | What you pass | Roughly |
|---|---|---|
| Marrakech to Aït Benhaddou | The High Atlas and the Tizi n’Tichka pass, 2,260 m | 4 hours |
| Aït Benhaddou to the Dades valley | Ouarzazate, the Skoura palm groves, the Rose Valley | 3 hours |
| Dades valley to Merzouga | The Todra gorge, Tinghir, the Tafilalt oases | 5 to 6 hours with stops |
| Merzouga to Marrakech | The same road back in one day | 9 to 10 hours with stops |
Leg times are typical tour timings and move with traffic and photo stops. Checked October 2026.
The stops worth knowing about
Tizi n’Tichka is the highest major road pass in North Africa. The road is good and well engineered, but it is all curves for an hour or more, so anyone prone to car sickness should take something before leaving Marrakech and sit near the front.
Aït Benhaddou is a fortified earthen village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and a film set for Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Tours stop long enough to walk up through the village to the granary at the top. A local guide inside the kasbah is optional; on the featured trip it costs about €2 per person (October 2026).
The Todra gorge narrows to a slot between cliffs a few hundred metres high, and most tours stop to walk into it before the final run to the sand.
How the 3-day trip splits the road
On the featured trip, day one runs from your riad to a hotel in the Dades valley, with Aït Benhaddou on the way. Day two reaches Merzouga in the late afternoon, in time for the camel ride into Erg Chebbi at sunset and a night at the camp. Day three starts with sunrise over the dunes and ends back in Marrakech in the evening. Breakfasts and dinners are included; lunches are a stop at a roadside restaurant, paid on the day.
This is the trip the calendar books, from $129 per person, rated 4.9/5 from 23,939 reviews (October 2026):
Driving yourself
It can be done in a hire car, and the roads are paved the whole way. The catch is that the camps sit inside the dunes, beyond the end of the tarmac, so self-drivers still have to arrange a camel ride or a 4x4 transfer from Merzouga village, and the round trip is roughly 1,100 km of mountain and desert driving. A tour takes care of the driving, the camp booking and the transfer in one go.
The nights either side of the trip
Desert tours leave Marrakech early, and the driver sends the exact pickup time and place the evening before. Where you sleep the night before changes how that pickup goes.
| Where to sleep | Suits | The pickup |
|---|---|---|
| A riad in the Medina | A first visit: courtyard houses, a walk to Jemaa el-Fna and the souks | Many riads sit on lanes no van can enter, so the meeting point is often the nearest square or gate |
| A hotel in Gueliz | Late arrivals and big suitcases: the new town, on proper streets near the train station | The van usually stops at the door |
| A hotel in Merzouga | Self-drivers, or anyone adding a second night at the dunes | Camps and dune hotels sit at the edge of Erg Chebbi |
If you land in Marrakech the day before your tour, a walk with a local guide is an easy way to learn the medina before you leave it for three days. Free walking tours in Marrakesh are free to book and run on tips: you pay the guide what you think the walk was worth at the end (GuruWalk).

If the distance is a deal-breaker
Ending the trip in Fes instead of driving back cuts the return leg; the Marrakech to Fes guide compares those trips. Two days is enough for Zagora, which is closer and has smaller dunes; see Merzouga or Zagora.
