Merzouga or Zagora: Which Desert Should You Book From Marrakech?
Merzouga has the tall Erg Chebbi dunes and needs three days; Zagora fits two days with smaller dunes. Drive times, prices from $74 and who each suits. October 2026.
Book Merzouga if you have three days, and Zagora if you only have two. Merzouga sits at the edge of Erg Chebbi, the field of tall orange dunes that appears in most Sahara photos, but it is about 560 km from Marrakech. Zagora is closer, so it fits a two-day trip, and its dunes are lower and patchier. Both trips cross the High Atlas and stop at Aït Benhaddou, so the choice comes down to time and how much the big dunes matter to you.

Why most people pick Merzouga
The dunes are the reason. Erg Chebbi rises out of flat stony ground in a single sweep of sand, and the camps sit inside it, so you ride a camel in at sunset and wake up with dunes on every side. Zagora gives you a camel ride and a camp night too, but the sand is a smaller patch and you see the edges of it.
The three-day route also spreads the drive out. Day one crosses the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 m, stops at Aït Benhaddou and ends with a hotel night in the Dades valley. Day two runs through the Todra gorge and reaches the dunes in the late afternoon. Day three is the long drive back. The featured trip includes both breakfasts and dinners, a hotel room with a private bathroom and the camp tier you choose at booking.

When Zagora is the better call
Zagora makes sense when two days is all the itinerary allows, or when two long road days with children would cost more goodwill than the bigger dunes are worth. It is also the cheaper trip. The featured two-day Zagora tour includes the drive via Aït Benhaddou, one dinner, one breakfast and a camel ride at both sunset and sunrise, and it is rated 4.7/5 from 368 reviews (October 2026). Lunch and drinks are extra on both routes.
What you give up is scale. If the picture in your head is a ridge of sand higher than a church tower, Zagora will feel like a preview.
Where Agafay fits
Agafay is the “desert” most day trips from Marrakech go to. It is a stony plateau 40 to 50 minutes from the city, with dinner camps, quad bikes and short camel rides, and no large dunes. It is a good evening out, and nothing more than that; the Agafay dinner show page compares those evenings. The Sahara day trip guide explains what a single day can and cannot reach.
