"Saida was charming as well as informative and fun. The hike was led by Jamal who was excellent - very attentive to those who might struggle. He allowed us time to take in the scenery and to take photographs. Lunch was well organised in a beautiful spot. Highly recommended."

The Ourika Guide
Ourika Valley From Marrakech: What the Day Is Really Like
The road, the waterfall walk, Ourika or Ouzoud, and the one thing to know about the river.
The Ourika valley is the easiest way into the High Atlas from Marrakech: about 65 km of road, roughly an hour and a half each way, ending at the village of Setti Fatma, where a guided walk climbs the river to the waterfalls. The day is not a wilderness hike. It is a mountain outing with a scramble in the middle, mint tea in an Amazigh house and a long lunch on a terrace over the river, and you are back in the city by late afternoon. If that is the day you want, it is very good value.

How the day runs
The featured trip picks you up in Marrakech in the morning and climbs south-east towards the mountains, about 50 minutes of driving before the first stops. The valley starts at Tnine Ourika, named for its weekly market (tnine means Monday), and the souk there is worth seeing if your day falls on a Monday. On the way up, tours stop at an argan oil cooperative run by women and at an Amazigh house for mint tea. Past Aghbalou the road follows the river, lined with terraces, walnut trees and restaurant tables set out over the water, to Setti Fatma, where the tarmac ends.
The waterfall walk is about 80 minutes with your guide, and lunch by the river takes about as long again. The whole day is 7 to 8 hours from pickup to drop-off. The featured trip includes the transport, a licensed driver, a local guide, the walk, the cooperative and tea stops, a small breakfast, and lunch (starter, main course and dessert) on the option that includes it. Check which option you pick on the calendar, since lunch is what changes between the prices.
The waterfall walk, honestly
A chain of waterfalls steps up the hills above Setti Fatma. A day trip reaches the first one or two. The path is not a trail: you cross the river on stones and planks, climb over boulders and take a couple of short scrambles where a hand from the guide helps. Reaching the first fall takes 30 to 45 minutes, and the higher falls take longer and get rougher. Wear shoes with grip that can get wet, and leave the flip-flops for the lunch terrace.
The water itself changes with the season. In spring, with snowmelt from the peaks, the falls run strong; by late summer they can be a thin stream. The valley stays green either way, and in July it is several degrees cooler than Marrakech, and Setti Fatma gets busy at weekends and in high season. On a weekday the walk is calmer.

Ourika or Ouzoud?
The other famous waterfall day trip from Marrakech goes to Ouzoud, and the two are easy to confuse. They are different days.
| Ourika valley (Setti Fatma) | Ouzoud falls | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance from Marrakech | About 65 km | About 150 km |
| Road time | About 1 h 30 each way | 2.5 to 3 hours each way |
| The waterfalls | A chain of smaller falls up a mountain stream, reached by a scramble | One big fall, about 110 m in three drops, with boats at the foot |
| The rest of the day | Amazigh villages, an argan cooperative, lunch by the river | A walk down into the gorge, Barbary macaques on the path |
| Featured day trip | Ourika Waterfalls, Atlas Mountains, Guide + Lunch, from $16 | Ouzoud Falls Guided Hike, Boat Ride and Lunch, from $18 |
Distances measured on the road; prices checked October 2026.

Pick Ouzoud if the waterfall itself is the reason for the day and five or six hours in a van do not put you off. Pick Ourika if you want the mountains, a walk and a long lunch with an easy drive home.
The river: the one thing to respect
On an ordinary day the Ourika is a cold, friendly river that children paddle in. It is also a mountain river with a steep catchment, and summer thunderstorms over the High Atlas can raise it within minutes. On 17 August 1995 a flash flood killed over 230 people across the region, many of them in the Ourika valley, and the valley now has flood sirens. Morocco’s weather service issues storm warnings for Al Haouz province when storms build. On a day with a warning, or when the sky darkens over the peaks in the afternoon, stay off the river bed and do what your guide says.
Going without a tour
You can. The road is paved all the way to Setti Fatma, and shared grand taxis and minibuses run up from Marrakech. In the village, local guides offer to lead the climb to the falls, which is worth taking since the path is unmarked and crosses the river. A tour earns its price by bundling the pickup, the guide and lunch, and by doing the driving on a winding mountain road.
Planning the rest of your days
The Ourika valley is a day; the Sahara is not. Real dunes start two days away, and the Sahara day trip guide explains why. For a day on the coast instead of in the mountains, the Essaouira day trip runs about 180 km west to the walled port town. When you are ready for the desert, the 3-day Merzouga trip is the most-reviewed Sahara trip from Marrakech. For the Ourika day itself, check availability for your date.

What Ourika Day-Trippers Say
"The transport was comfortable and the driver very good never felt worried even on the steep and winding. mountain roads. We were well informed about the trip and our guide Saida created a friendly atmosphere ensuring everyone was happy and looked after. The Argon oil collective was interesting they helped us sample the numerous products and gave us a welcome tea and bread snack. With so many products it was too difficult to choose and felt a little busy and rushed. The guide for the hike was great he carefully guided us through the busy village and up onto the trail to the water falls. The walk itself was one that needs concentration and some effort, the views were worth it spectacular scenery and a real mountain climb feel to the day. Our lunch at the riverside restaurant was generous and very tasty a lovely relaxed atmosphere. The journey back to Marrakesh gave us chance to stop for photographs and drinks. A very good experience great value, a must do"
"this trip exceeded our expectations! it was rhe favourite day of our holiday. the views and people were spectacular and it was a great change from the busyness of the city. Chaimaa was so friendly and enthusiastic, kind and caring, thank you!!!"
"Our guide Walid was very good and extremely attentive. A big thanks to the driver Faiz as well. His driving skills are impressive. Although the hike to the Waterfall is a little bit steep, it's absolutely worth it. The scenery and views are amazing. The lunch was very good. Plenty for everyone. Overall we enjoyed the experience. The only recommendation we would address is to wear proper runners for the trip. Fashion runners or sneakers without grip are perhaps not the best choice. We wore them and it was quite slippy. But other than this we would certainly recommend this trip. Many thanks"
"Walid was a great Guide and we really enjoyed the trip with him, he was really funny was looking after us and told us some great facts. Our driver Faez was also great. Overall a great tour if you are a tourist wanting to have a look at the mountains we would recommend it."
"Extremely well-organized trip! The pickup was punctual to the minute. Our guide, Saida, was absolutely amazing—she speaks fluent English and shared so many interesting fun facts about Morocco along the way. The hike wasn't too demanding at all (our 8-year-old daughter handled it with ease), and the food at the restaurant was delicious. Saida even helped us get a fantastic table right by the river. Thank you for everything... highly recommended!"
"The tour was very good, Salma was very helpful and enthusiastic. The hike was quite easy with stops for those who needed it, lead by a great tour guide. The lunch was tasty, with lots of options after the hike. Would highly recommend as a sightseeing tour."
"Great guide Salma was fantastic ,very helpful . The Ourika guide was very nice too and very very helpful ."

Ourika Valley Day Trip: Questions Before You Book
The questions people ask Google about the Ourika valley, answered for a day out from Marrakech.
Yes, if you want a mountain day without a night away. The Ourika valley is the closest High Atlas valley to Marrakech, about 65 km by road, so you get green terraces, a cold river, Amazigh villages and a waterfall walk for one day and a modest price. It is not a wilderness: Setti Fatma, where the road ends, is busy with day-trippers and riverside restaurants. If you want quiet trails and big peaks, a guided hike from Imlil suits you better. If you want the easy version of the Atlas, Ourika is the day trip that does it.
By road: about 65 km south-east to Setti Fatma, roughly 1 hour 30 minutes each way, through Tnine Ourika and Aghbalou. The simplest way is a day trip with hotel pickup, which covers the transport and usually a local guide and lunch. Independently, shared grand taxis and minibuses run from Marrakech towards the valley, and a private driver is the flexible middle option. The map on this page shows the road and the stops.
It depends on what you want from the day. For mountains and water close by, Ourika: about 65 km, back by late afternoon. For the sea and a walled port town, Essaouira: about 180 km, a longer day with cooler air. For a bigger waterfall, Ouzoud: about 150 km and 2.5 to 3 hours each way. For an evening out of the city, Agafay's stony plateau. Real Sahara dunes need at least two days. Our Essaouira day trip page covers the coast option.
Ouzoud has the bigger waterfall: about 110 m in three drops, with boats at the foot of the falls. Ourika has the shorter drive: about 65 km against about 150 km, so roughly 3 hours on the road for the day instead of 5 to 6. Choose Ouzoud if the waterfall itself is the point and a long day is fine. Choose Ourika if you want the High Atlas, a riverside lunch and a walk, with an easier return. The comparison table puts the two side by side.
The Setti Fatma waterfalls in the Ourika valley are the closest of the well-known ones, about 65 km and roughly 1 hour 30 minutes away, plus a rocky walk of about 30 to 45 minutes from the village to the first fall. The Ouzoud falls are about 150 km away, 2.5 to 3 hours by road each way.
On a day trip the hike is the walk from Setti Fatma up to the waterfalls. Reaching the first fall takes about 30 to 45 minutes each way over boulders and through the river bed, with some short scrambles; the higher falls take longer and are rougher. Most tours walk to the first one or two and give you the choice to go on. Wear shoes with grip that can get wet. Some tours swap the waterfall climb for a gentler village and riverside walk, so check the itinerary before you book.
It is part of them. The Ourika valley is one of the valleys that cut into the High Atlas south of Marrakech, following the Ourika river up to Setti Fatma. Tours sold as an Atlas Mountains day trip often mean Ourika, or the Imlil valley below Toubkal, Morocco's highest peak. Read the itinerary to see which valley a trip visits.
Yes. The road is paved to Setti Fatma, shared taxis and minibuses run up from Marrakech, and you can walk around the village and along the river alone. At Setti Fatma, local guides offer to lead the climb to the waterfalls; the path is not signposted and crosses the river, so many visitors take one. A day trip simply bundles the transport, the guide and lunch.
Walk to the Setti Fatma waterfalls; eat lunch at a riverside terrace with your feet near the water; visit an Amazigh house for mint tea; stop at an argan oil cooperative; browse the Monday market at Tnine Ourika if your trip falls on a Monday; or visit the Anima garden near the valley entrance. Most day trips string three or four of these together.
Group day trips from Marrakech start around $8 per person, and the featured trip is from $16 with hotel pickup, a guide and lunch (prices checked October 2026). Private trips with your own driver cost more. Drinks, tips and an optional guide at the waterfalls may be extra, and what is included varies by trip, and the calendar shows the live price for your date.
On an ordinary day it is a busy, safe family outing. The river is the one real risk: summer thunderstorms over the High Atlas can raise it within minutes, and on 17 August 1995 a flash flood killed over 230 people across the region, many of them in the Ourika valley. Morocco's weather service issues storm warnings, and the valley has flood sirens. On a stormy afternoon, stay off the river bed and follow your guide.
Spring, when the river runs high and the terraces are green, and autumn are the most pleasant. In summer the valley is several degrees cooler than Marrakech, and it gets busy at weekends and in high season. Winter days are crisp, with snow on the peaks above. Go on a weekday to avoid the Moroccan weekend crowds at Setti Fatma.
Shoes with grip that can get wet, light layers (the valley is cooler than the city, and colder in winter), sun protection, water, and some cash in dirhams for drinks, tips and the optional waterfall guide. A small backpack is easier than a bag on the climb.
