Can You Do a Day Trip to the Sahara From Marrakech?

Not to the real dunes: Merzouga is 560 km away and Zagora needs a night. What a single day reaches (Agafay), and the 2-day Zagora trip from $74. October 2026.

Updated October 2026

No. There is no day trip from Marrakech to the Sahara dunes. The nearest sand sea worth the name is around Zagora, six to seven hours’ drive away, and the big Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga are about 560 km off. A tour that promises “the desert” and gets you back for dinner is going to Agafay, a stony plateau on the edge of the city. The shortest real Sahara trip is two days with one night at a camp.

The 2-day Zagora trip

Day one leaves Marrakech in the morning, climbs over the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass, stops at the kasbah village of Aït Benhaddou and runs down the Draa valley, with its palm groves, to the dunes near Zagora. You ride a camel to the camp at sunset, eat dinner there and sleep in a tent. Day two starts with a sunrise camel ride, breakfast, and the drive back, arriving in Marrakech in the evening.

The featured trip includes the transport, a driver, one dinner, one breakfast and both camel rides. Lunch and drinks are extra, and so is a local guide at Aït Benhaddou. It is rated 4.7/5 from 368 reviews, from $74 per person (October 2026):

Be honest with yourself about the driving: twelve to fourteen hours in a van across two days, for one evening and one morning in the dunes. Most people who make the trip think it is worth it. If you can find one more day, the Merzouga trip gives you far bigger dunes for the same kind of drive, split by a hotel night.

Agafay: good evening, wrong desert

Agafay is a hamada, a plateau of stones and low hills, with the Atlas on the skyline. Camps there serve dinner with music, and the popular tours add a quad bike or a short camel ride at sunset. Plenty of people love it as an evening out of the city. Just book it as that, and not as the Sahara, because there are no dunes to climb. The Agafay desert dinner show guide covers the timings, the show and which evening to pick.

If what you want from a single day is a change of scene rather than sand, two trips do it better than Agafay: the Ourika valley day trip to the High Atlas waterfalls, and the Essaouira day trip to the walled port on the Atlantic.
