Sahara Weather at Merzouga: The Best Time for a Desert Tour

July averages about 43°C by day; January nights average about 6°C and can freeze. The best months for Merzouga, what to pack, and how the camp copes. October 2026.

Updated October 2026

The best time for a Sahara trip from Marrakech is spring (March to May) or autumn (late September to November). Days are warm rather than fierce and nights are cool enough for a blanket. Winter works too, with mild afternoons and cold nights. High summer is the hard season: the average July high at Merzouga is about 43°C, and the dunes hold the heat well into the evening.

Summer: possible, with care

Tours run all year, and the camel ride is timed for sunset and sunrise, the two coolest parts of the day. The problem is the hours in between: the van journey across the plain east of Tinghir, and a camp that is still warm at midnight. If summer is the only window, book a luxury tent with air conditioning, drink more water than feels necessary and keep the afternoon stops short.

Winter: cold nights, clear skies

Winter surprises people. The afternoons are pleasant, but once the sun drops behind the dunes the temperature falls fast, and January nights average around 6°C. Standard camps provide heavy blankets; luxury tents on most trips are heated. Bring a fleece, a hat and socks for the night, and the reward is the clearest sky of the year.

What to pack whatever the season

  • A small backpack for the camp night, since suitcases stay in the vehicle
  • A scarf or buff against sun and blowing sand
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen, even in winter
  • A warm layer for the evening and the early start for sunrise
  • Cash for lunch stops and drinks, which are not included on most trips
